January 2011Another year is in the books, WHEW! – hope the new year brings us all great opportunities and adventures! With the close of this year – I’d like to take a moment to thank you for this season’s holiday cards with your notes of family updates, annual going-on’s, encouragement and appreciation. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of life, we may lose a bit of perspective on each of our contributions to our surroundings so reminders such as your cards are very much appreciated and I look forward to seeing you at the 2012 Reunion!
As most of you know, the Association has had its challenges over the last 14 months regarding Membership. We were fortunate to have our Web site Coordinator, Nancy Taylor, step to the plate in February 2011 and process your member renewals, gift memberships and new member requests. In September, Barbara and Alvan Tenney agreed to assume the officer roles of Membership Chairpersons but unfortunately life events prevented them from fulfilling the position. In December, Vice President Debby Bianchi stepped up and began processing your membership requests. It is with great appreciation that over the last 3 weeks, Debby rallied the officers and we pitched in and “got’ter done”! Thanks to ALL who helped, especially “our leader”, Debby Bianchi! Elsewhere in this newsletter are acknowledgements of new and renewed Lifetime members, Benefactors, Sustaining, New and gifted member recipients. Below are renewed members for the calendar year 2011. If you have submitted payment for your membership and DO NOT find your name listed, either below or in the list located elsewhere in this newsletter, please contact Debby Bianchi right away! We will remedy the situation as quickly as possible. In that light, we have been unable to reach Carol Monsanto, Terrill Sorrell Tenney and Marsha Humphreys – if anyone knows where Carol, Terrill and Marsha are, please reach out to either Debby Bianchi or our missing members to have them contact Debby!

Over the next few weeks, focus will be on sending out Renewal Notices to those of you who have inadvertently expired; you will also be asked if you prefer to receive your Tenney Times newsletter via email. But you don’t have to wait for us to get caught up – a membership application is available at the website, so feel free to print one out and “get’ter done!
Thank you for your patience and diligence – And WELCOME BACK – we are delighted you have chosen the Association in these tough times and we look forward to working together to continue the great work our Association is known for! Happy New Year!

Fall 2011The 2011 Reunion visit to Gettysburg was pretty amazing! Read about our adventures on the
Reunion Page.
The Civil War project turned out to be much larger than anticipated, only 5 states were "completed" for inclusion in the reunion CW Booklet; so work will continue on the remaining and incomplete states. If you still have Civil War information, please forward for inclusion. Thanks to George & Vera Tinney and Jim Tenney for their Civil War solider submissions and a VERY big Thank You to Barb Horan for her amazing assistance, research feats and plethora of data - her efforts liken to Debby Bianchi's assistance! Thank you both.
The booklet format distributed at the reunion tour received very positive feedback and will translate well into a book format, so plans are to continue with it unless those of you who received a copy have suggestions - I'm all ears!
As you've probably figured out, focus over the last 8 months has been the Civil War project and reunion. Over the next few months, efforts to complete the Genealogy Archive project will be underway. Hopefully, 2012 will be able to make progress on the Civil War project, genealogy updates and Board Certification research project.
Still looking forward to hearing from our facebook inquiries Caden Tenney, Josh Tenney, Sheree Hughes-Irwin, and Connie Lambert Crowl. Please drop me an email for response to your inquiry.
Be sure to MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The 2012 reunion will be in Northern Arizona - co hosting with our AZ cousins, October 12-14. If anyone is interested in being part of the planning, being on the Reunion Committee, resides in the areas of interest, or has ideas for the reunion - please contact me. You can e-mail debbiem@tenneyfamily.org.

Summer 2011 This is the last newsletter BEFORE the reunion so MARK YOUR CALENDERS! Please make sure you register for the reunion and fill out your ballot! The Nominating Committee has worked very hard to prepare for this year's election. Thanks to the committee and to the members who stepped up to serve our Association. Please acknowledge their generosity and VOTE!
The guided tour project of Gettysburg National Military Park is well underway. The tour will include visits to monuments, battle locales and other POI's of our Tenney and Allied family Soldiers. This is a BIG project and we are working very hard to complete as many states as possible in time for the reunion. Currently Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin are completed thanks to Robert Lundberg, Ruth Sprowls, Marsha Baergen, Duane & Dave Dubke, Dency Terrill, Melanie Tenney & Roger Phenix, Bill Goodman and, especially Debby Bianchi (Thanks for the box!). If you are working on the project, please submit your info by July 30th so there is time to include your contributions. The "call to members" for assistance is still needed, we still have a few states needing "adoption" including CT, IA, MO, TN & UT; or any state you are familiar with/want to research. We are looking to include Tenney & Allied soldier's military records, the unit's they served in and personal experiences (diaries, letters, pictures, etc). As a personal touch, we have included on the Reunion Registration form a place to include your Civil War ancestor's name. If you don't know, please contact me as I will be happy to locate your ancestor for inclusion in the tour. We need your help! Your contributions will be invaluable this project. Please find reunion details elsewhere in this newsletter including the registration form.
The Website and Facebook continues to be wonderful tools! (Thanks Nancy Taylor & Larry Tenney!) Eunice Bullis writes that her book on the "Bullis/Peters Family" is close to being completed - Congrats Eunice! Vicki Schwab had a question about the Samuel Tenney in the Revolutionary War; Margaret & Frank Tenney located Stanley C. Tenney's obit; Julie Dull announced daughter Jenny's engagement - Congrats Jenny & Nathan!; Diana Ellison is researching the Lidgate/Tenney line; Ian Tenney is documenting his paternal grandmother's 18th century cedar chest from Scotland - way cool!; Todd Krewal, brother of Kathleen Race, is continuing Kathleen's work updating the Elizabeth Ann Tenney line; Catherine Matlack & her brother Ross are researching & updating their lineage info on Rachel Catherine Tenney Westfall; Bill Goodman located a recent article on actor Jon Tenney (whose line we still have not determined, but keep trying to!) and advised the appointment of cousin Donald P. Tenney as resident of the LDS Madrid Spain Temple, Congrats Donald!; and Bob Lundberg & sister Lois Carter are also working on their Lundberg/Tenney/Carter lines. It's great to hear from you. Thanks for your contributions!
We've had the pleasure of hearing from 2 NEW MEMBERS - Marsha Humphreys and Barbara Ann Bachmann Williams - WELCOME LADIES! We are delighted you joined us and look forward to working on your inquiries. We have also received inquiries on our Facebook page from Caden Tenney, Josh Tenney, Sheree Hughes-Irwin, and Connie Lambert Crowl It's great to hear from you and we look forward to following up with you shortly. Thank you for contacting us and please drop me an email for response to your inquiry.
Haven't made any progress on Shelly Cardiel's request. Haven't heard from Cara Witkowski. The research on Joe Bella's "mystery" photo has not been resolved - guess we are "batting a 1000"! Any assistance is much appreciated.
Make sure to MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The 2012 reunion will be in Northern Arizona (not near the fire area!) - co hosting with our AZ cousins, October 12-14. May 2011Spring has sprung – much to the relief of our snow bound cousins! The BIG news is our website is back and it is GREAT! If you haven’t visited yet, do so! Kudos to Nancy Taylor for coordinating the effort & to the contributors for a really wonderful job!
As many of you know, we lost long time member and “mom” Mary Montgomery in February. The family, John and I want to express our gratitude to everyone who sent condolences, you are all so kind and generous. There’s nothing quite as comforting as family during tough times – thank you for being our rock. Alvan and Barbara Tenney also lost Alvan’s mom (on the same day, no less) and then within a couple of months had two additions to the family! Our sincere condolences on their loss and heartfelt congratulations on the new “10E Twigs”! And so it goes.
Plans for the Reunion guided tour of Gettysburg National Military Park are underway to include visits to monuments, battle locales and other POI’s, “walking” in our ancestors footsteps. Our “call to members” for assistance is still needed, we have a few states needing “adoption” including CT, IA, MO, TN & UT; or any state you are familiar with/want to research. We are looking for Tenney & Allied soldier’s military records, the unit’s they served in and personal experiences (diaries, letters, pictures, etc). Please contact me if you have CW records or are willing to contribute research time to this project. Do you have a CW Ancestor in your line? Please drop me a note on who your ancestor is. We need your help! Your contributions will be invaluable to the reunion tour project. Please find reunion details elsewhere in this newsletter including the registration form.
The Archive and Board Certification projects are back on “hold”, as the Civil War project is ramping up thanks to Barb Horan, Marsha Baergen, Nila Gott, Ruth Sprowls, Nancy Taylor and Dency Terrill’s efforts. We’ve just about completed processing our soldier’s from Lake Co., Ohio, and preparing to process Michigan. Great job Marsha (MI) & Ruth (Lake Co., OH)! Everyone else on the project is working diligently to seek out our Tenney’s service records and I am feverishly processing their submissions. Thanks ladies for all your enthusiastic contributions!
The website is already such a benefit! We have received several inquiries from new & returning contacts. It’s great to hear from Ali Crossman, Corrine Collins & Connie Schnitger – welcome back!; Marcus Grant is submitting a copy of his completed project on Cochise Valley, Thanks Grant!; Bruce I. Tenney, is recuperating but anxious to get back; George & Alice Painter are also on the road to recovery; Joe Bella from Methuen Historical Society-we are trying to identify a photograph of a Civil War soldier possibly connected to the Daniel Woodbury Tenney family; (Anyone have info on a Joseph F. Tenney of the 59th MA Infantry?); Duane Dubke found a story of Dr. Sam Tenney from George Washington’s War by Bruce Chadwick regarding pensions for officers at Valley Forge & notes to Dr. Peter Turner (aka Turner Papers) – can’t wait to see the copies!; Charles West is working on his family updates; Roger Phenix found a letter on ebay written by Solon Tenney French (the letter is in German!) – good eye Roger!; Barron forwarded some info on Frank Tenney Johnson’s Gallery & also found a photo display of Tenney Cow Bridge in New Hampshire – turns out Roger Phenix’s gg-grandparents farm includes the bridge & he knows the current owner; Robert Lundberg has been busy researching his line & submitted updates; Joy Shingleton found an error in Book 4 – thanks Joy – will make the correction; Ruth Sprowls located an obit for Oliver Tenney & marriage record for Deborah E. Tenney from the local papers – good eye Ruth! Debby Bianchi & cousin Carmie Shorey located Edith (Tenney) Gray’s obit; Kathryn Hancock sent in family marriage updates; Larry Tenney forwarded updates & corrections on the Charles Henry Tenney family. Thanks to all for keeping in touch and providing new/improved data.
We’ve had the pleasure of being contacted by Geoff Stevens, a descendant of Aurora A. Tenney & Henry A. Stevens, he has some military documents; Jake Tenney, a descendant of Solomon B. Tenney – he just located a cache of photos; Danielle Page, a descendant of Howard Andrew Tenney and long time member June Tenney Davis; Leesa Tenney, Lori Schaum who is researching William A. Tenney, and Ross Matlock, a descendant of Rachel C. Tenney. It’s great to hear from you. Thanks again for contacting us!
We are still working on Shelley Cardiel’s request to find a home for her “rescued” a photo of Mattie Tenney & Sam Sutton. Mattie is Martha Parker Tenney, dau. of Charles William Tenney & Mary A. LaDue. In our research, we believe this is part of Cara Witkowski’s line. Anyone know where Cara is? Appreciate any info.
Make sure to MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The 2012 reunion will be in Northern Arizona – co hosting with our AZ cousins, October 12-14. Any member residing in, familiar with the Pennsylvania, Maryland and Northern Arizona areas, who are interested in being an integral part of the Civil War projects or a member of the 2011/2012 Reunion Committees – please contact me. January 2011Can you believe it? Another year is in the books – hope the new decade brings us all great opportunities and adventures! With the close of this year – I’d like to take a moment to thank you for this season’s holiday cards with your notes of family updates, annual going-on’s, encouragement and appreciation. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of life, we may lose a bit of perspective on each of our contributions to our surroundings so reminders such as your cards are very much appreciated. This past decade saw the completion of the Tenney Family genealogy update with the release of the new books. For those who didn’t know, this project was originally started by Tenney R Humphrey and Agnes Callaway waaay back in 1984-85. Your contributions and support was instrumental in bringing MJ’s work into the new millennium. Thank you.
We’ve had the pleasure of being contacted by Brad Bascom, who serves as Genealogist and Reunion Coordinator for the Bascom Family – his ancestors, brothers Elihu & Elisha Bascom married Tenney sisters Hannah & Temperance. Brad has some great pictures and we are looking forward to the exchange of great information. We’ve also heard from Nila Gott who submitted a wonderful recount of her mother’s “life story”. Mike Keown submitted a group picture with an unknown Tenney that we are working on identifying; Lisa Corbin was looking for a Mary Tenney in her line, a bit of research located her Mary, dau. of Samuel & Deborah (Wilbur) Tenney of Raymond, ME. Looking forward to updating this line with Lisa’s info – Thanks for contacting us Lisa! Shelley Cardiel “rescued” a photo of Mattie Tenney & Sam Sutton and is looking for a family member to return the photo to. Mattie is Martha Parker Tenney, dau. of Charles William Tenney & Mary A. LaDue. In our research, we believe this is part of Cara Witkowski’s line but have been unable to reach Cara. If anyone is in touch with Cara, please have her contact me.
The Archive project is slowly getting back on track, hope to complete very soon. The BC project is temporarily pending until time can be made available to “jump in”. Nancy Taylor and Scott Tenney have located Naturalization & Immigration Records on Tenney’s from the late 1800’s & early 1900’s. This is interesting in that we know Thomas was in America long before there were these types of records. Preliminary research for an explanation indicates these records are on Tenney’s traveling abroad or “foreign” spouses. There also appears to be a historical context during this time period that people born in the US were “asked”/required to obtain Naturalization documents (kind of like today’s passport). This is a preliminary assumption, and research continues. If anyone has such documents or information regarding, please feel free to forward.
In the last newsletter, I submitted a “call to members” for help with a Civil War project for the 2011 Reunion in Frederick, Maryland. I asked for members to submit their CW ancestor’s info for inclusion in the Reunion CW theme and expansion of the current military info in the database & future publications by helping identify Tenney/Tenny/Tinney’s who served. We are looking for soldier’s military records, the unit’s they served in, regimental histories & rosters. We have compiled a list of data we currently have but need a lot of search assistance. Please contact me if you have CW records or are willing to help with this project. We need your help! Thanks to Marsha Baergen (MI), Nila Gott (IN), Barb Horan (PA), George Painter (WV), Ruth Sprowls (Lake Co., OH), Nancy Taylor (NY, MA, ME, NH) and Dency Terrill (MI) for volunteering to search specific State Records for our Tenney ancestor’s military records. You are AWESOME!
